Australia's major defence projects in further $1.2bn budget blowout

In The Guardian.

Cost of 26 projects rises by $24bn compared with what was originally announced, auditor general finds

Perhaps the UK MoD could offer some advice...

I think the main issue was that they bought more F-35's - otherwise there was only the NRH 90 programme that is a "concern"

The F-35 requirement was always for 72 birds plus an optional 28. The Super Hornets and Growlers [total 35] are going great so the need for the 28 additional ships slips well to the right.

Politicians have a large hand in the purchases - let's not buy an off-the-shelf submarine, let's buy something from France that has never been built, and then the workshop in my electorate, which hasn't built anything bigger than a barbecue, can have a go at it. That will win me some votes from Oodnagalahbie. Then we can get the old Holden engine shop, recently gone out of business, to make the engine. More votes from Kickatinalong. What's left? I dunno, should we ask somebody who actually knows?
