AMEs closed?

Any idea if CAA will grant extensions to Pilot Medicals expiring due refusal by AME to conduct medical exams either due covid-19 separation. Or to busy on NHS work?

In Canada, extensions have been granted until June, for what it's worth to know that in the UK...

Got this today from my AME.

The CAA medical department issued new exemptions, today 24 March 2020, for Class 1 and Class 3 medical certificate holders and Cabin Crew medical reports.
If you have a Cl1 or Cl3 certificate, or a Cabin Crew Medical Report which was valid on 23/03/2020 and which is not valid beyond 31/10/2020 then you may claim an exemption until 22/11/2020. In order to continue to fly, or control after 22/11/2020 you must re-validate with your AME before that date.
Carry your expired medical certificate and a copy of the exemption notice. We think a print of this email will suffice.
You do not have to claim the exemption - if you prefer to attend and maintain validity in the usual way we expect to remain here to provide a service, unless events dictate a change in this intention.
Importantly, if you have a medical condition that requires you to send in reports from a specialist then this must still occur.
If you are unsure please contact your usual AME and we will try to help.

My class 2 is due to expire at the beginning of April. Last I heard from my AME (Monday of this week) they're still open for business.

I have a medical booked in the very near future but given that none of us are flying at the moment, my thoughts are let it expire and sort out the resulting bureaucracy later on in the year when (hopefully) we are all allowed to move around again. My only slight concern with this approach is whether or not it would then be treated as an initial issue and additional jumping through hoops that can entail. I'd like to think that the CAA will apply some common sense here and handle these as delayed renewals, but who knows!

If you have held a medical how can it be regarded as an "initial issue" you just renew it as normal.

Don't take this as gospel but there is slight discrepancy between a revalidation and renewal I believe. The only one I have come across personally is that if blood is found in your urine on a revalidation you can continue to fly while the reason is diagnosed but with a renewal you cannot.

For UK LAPL and PPL holders, this may be of interest.

As my UK PPL Class 2 medical is about to expire I have completed the CAA online medical declaration. It was a simple procedure but I'm aware
that, luckily, I have been healthy all my career. Therefore able to "tick the boxes" as none of the prohibtions apply to me.

Will maybe not bother with getting a Class 2 again...........
