It was originally announced in May 2021 as 1.4 billion GBP but later an extra £300m added to it due to delays. . The original 2018 FMS approval (for 16 airframes) quoted $3.5 billion!!!

Slightly strange comment as I recall relations between US and UK were pretty good, albeit behind the scenes initially. The State Dept was less keen, but the Pentagon and WH were supportive.

The initial number always had to be 9, just because that was the number of Nimrod MRA4s that they were prepared to accept. It would have been hard to convince the Treasury to fund more of an aircraft...
