I don't know which company you work for, but calling in sick where I used to work in the USA wasn't a problem. Lots of people I knew did and didn't have any issues. Seems like a safety culture issue...

You don't need an FAA license of any sort before going across. Not even a PPL. If you meet the minimums for the issue of an FAA ATP, then your type rating checkride doubles as your FAA ATP checkride....
